The University of Central Florida Proudly Announces the Establishment of the Charles N. Millican Endowed Chair in Computer Science This chair, one of the first of its kind in the southeast, has been established with an initial funding of $1,000,000. The Search Committee is accepting applications and nominations for a person who will help us become a leader in computer science. We desire an individual with an established and continuing record of research excellence in one of the core areas of computer science. Areas which are of particular interest to us include Architecture (especially VLSI design), Programming Systems (languages, tools and environments), Artificial Intelligence (especially expert systems), Data Bases, and Algorithm Design and Analysis. The successful candidate's research abilities must be demonstrated by traditional academic measures. In particular, we are looking for an individual who has extensive publications in refereed scholarly journals, has national recognition and is experienced in guiding the research efforts of others. The University of Central Florida's Endowed Chair in Computer Science presents many opportunities and challenges. You will work as part of an emerging computer science program. Our departmental research facilities include a VAX 11/780, a VAX 11/730, a PDP 11/44, a microprocessor laboratory, and a VLSI design laboratory. These departmental resources are managed by a full time staff including a director, a systems programmer and a technician. In addition, we have easy access to the University's IBM and Harris mainframes and the substantial equipment that is attached to Florida's computing networks. These include CDC, UNIVAC, IBM, and AMDAHL machines. Computer Science at UCF offers programs leading to degrees at all three levels. Our Ph.D. program, the first in the state of Florida, was formed as the State's only center of excellence in Computer Science. We have twenty full-time faculty and fifteen part time faculty who are supported by over thirty graduate assistants. The University's enrollment is about 15,000, with almost one in ten being a computer science major. Central Florida and Orlando are becoming centers for high technology. The presence of high tech industries promises to provide an excellent forum for industrial/university cooperation. Such a forum will increase the already substantial research support provided to us by Central Florida's industries. We want an individual who interacts well with others and is willing to guide the research efforts of both students and junior faculty members. In return for this we offer an excellent salary opportunity and a great deal of freedom to pursue research goals. We also offer a superb, unpolluted environment in which to live. Orlando itself has a vast number of beautiful lakes, with the ocean being less than 40 minutes away. Salary and term of appointment are open. The starting date is also negotiable, with the most desirable time being mid August of 1984. Applications and nominations must be postmarked on or before March 1, 1984.
