I am concerned (perhaps needlessly) that positions are being filled solely on the basis of a job ad posted to the net. Are employees or low level managers of large companies consulting with their personnel and employment departments before posting to the net? Companies following the spirit of affirmative action rules make a special effort to locate qualified candidates of all backgrounds when filling a position. This includes advertising in places where these people are looking. Saying "Equal Opportunity Employer" in a job ad on the net is not going to cause the ad to reach minority candidates at a school which does not have USENET. It won't reach the vast majority of programmers who, through no fault of their own, work on business applications on non-UNIX systems. The companies that are hiring people with UNIX experience from the net are probably getting white males responding, with white females a distant second. I'd be interested in seeing the numbers. The personal computer market is exploding, and there is big money to be made by the people doing the development. No one should be excluded because they don't read netnews or any other bulletin board. Scott Orshan Bell Labs - CSO, Piscataway 201-981-3064 {pyuxi,houxm,ihnp4}!u1100a!sdo
