TITLE: COORDINATOR OF COMPUTING SERVICES GRADE: 14
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
To plan and manage the development, implementation and
operation of a large, heterogeneous, and distributed network of
personal computer workstations, minicomputers, and network serv-
ers. This computing environment will be developed as a collection
of regional centers. The Coordinator will directly manage some
centers and coordinate with others. He/she will be responsible
for and have authority for all networking between regional cen-
ters.
This network is known as the Computer-Aided Engineering Network
or CAEN.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Establish a collection of regional computing environments con-
nected together by local area networks and UMNET.
UMNET is the University-wide LAN.
Direct the work of supporting staff for day to day operations and
for maintenance of systems software, hardware, and applications
software.
Provide documentation, technical guidance, support and education
to users.
Develop and implement procedures to make maximum use of part-time
students in supporting the computing environment.
Maintain close liaison with the industrial partners involved in
building the CAEN.
Coordinate with internally funded R&D projects associated with
building the CAEN.
Provide liaison with the Computing Center and the Data Systems
Center.
Together with the College of Engineering Business Office prepare
and administer budgets for the building and support of the Col-
lege computing environment.
Employ, evaluate, and discipline supporting staff.
Participate in the development and preparation pf proposals for
external grants and contracts to support CAEN.
Develop and manage the computing environment for the Office of
the Dean.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Direction is received from the College Computing Services Execu-
tive Committee (appointed by the Dean) and from the Associate
Dean for Research and Graduate Studies.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over
professional, technical and office staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and
experience is necessary; a Master's degree in Computer Science or
a related field is desirable. Considerable progressively respon-
sible technical, supervisory and administrative experience in
computing is necessary. Reasonable knowledge of management proce-
dures, practices and methods is necessary.
