I don't really think the answer is to create a bunch of usa.* newsgroups.
Everyone should set up for a 'usa' distribution in their 'sys' files, and
then just get everyone in the habit (i.e. add to the Emily Post article)
of entering a 'usa' distribution for their articles. Non-'usa' sites who
wanted to receive 'usa' articles would have to be set up to receive usa.all
in their 'sys' files.

I'm new to the net, but isn't that how it's supposed to work?

I'd like to find out what local groups there are on wide distribution
in North America - I know that there is can.all, us(a?).all and na.all,
but what subgroups are there ?

The reason I'm asking this is that there seems to be a great deal of
traffic on the net that is NOT relevant for worldwide distribution. There
has been a great deal of discussion/argument in the European net (eunet)
recently on the fact that netnews does cost a non-trivial sum, and therefore
shouldn't we stop getting useless (sic) groups. The method of doing this
seems to be that whoever slags off their pet hate groups the loudest gets
them removed.

My proposition, should it turn out that the North American local groups are
used in the same manner as the European ones (events, general, news, test,
followup, bugs, works) is that the following groups be moved to a North
American or US distribution:-

net.ai - create a local ai subgroup, since there are many postings
of meetings (usually happening in 2 days time!).

net.jobs - create a us.jobs - there must be many jobs which are for
		   US citizens only.

net.legal - as most people are aware, law is not the same the world
		    over. A us.legal is needed.

net.politics - it seems from general opinion that a us.politics is
		       needed.

net.tv.all -> us.tv.all - is all this really relevant to the rest of
the world ? After all, we are 18 months ahead of you
		       on Dr. Who !!

net.wobegon - the less said the better.

There are probably other areas that are needed as well, though doubtless
some people will dispute those above.

We know that you guys with the funny accents (:-) started the net, and
we're very glad that you did, but pleeeeze try and realise that people like
Chris Maltby at ..!basser!chris in Australia, Yoon Kim at ..!kaist!yoonkim
in Korea, and a hell of a lot of others really do not need to know that
Fred Bloggs in Seattle is selling his '62 Chevy.

Above all, THINK. CONSIDER. And if you have any opinion on the matter
then please MAIL me, and I'll post the results to the net.
