[net.jobs] Jobs in University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

keith@edee.UUCP (Keith Farvis ) (01/30/84)

Applications are invited for two posts for experienced UNIX programmers
in the Edinburgh Regional Computing Centre, at the University of
Edinburgh.

The University has a large amount of computing resource running the UNIX
operating system, of both Bell and Berkeley origin. There are currently
6 * VAX 11/750, 5 * PDP-11, 2 * GEC Series-63 and 30 * PERQs running
UNIX, with another 2 * VAX 11/750s due within the next few months. These
facilities are mainly situated within University Departments while ERCC
houses central computing resource for the University as a whole.

The UNIX Support Unit within ERCC provides central support for UNIX.
This covers coordinating activity in the departments, where networking
and communications have been the main focus recently. It also includes
writing new device drivers and installing new systems. There is a joint
project underway to develop the GEC Series-63 as a support vehicle for
the Alvey-funded IKBS/SE infrastrucure project for the Artificial
Intelligence community. This work covers porting of System V utilities,
through mounting of IKBS support tools to the development of Ethernet
communications support.

The ERCC has a staff of over 150 and covers a very wide span of
computing expertise. We have developed our own operating system, EMAS,
and support proprietry systems VMS, TOPS-10, UCSD p-System and UNIX.
There is a large wide area network supporting over 1000 terminals, we
run a Cambridge Ring and are about to embark on two Ethernet projects,
one of which includes interfacing to a digital telephone exchange.

The working environment is on a campus on the edge of the city
overlooking green fields and yet is only 3 miles from the city centre.
The city itself, being the home of the annual Edinburgh International
Festival, is very cosmopolitan. There are the usual advantages of
working in a University environment which includes 6 weeks annual leave
plus public holidays.

One post is to help in central support and development of UNIX in ERCC
and in departments. The other post is to assist in the GEC Series-63
project. Both appointments are for 3 years initially and will be on
scales in the range 7,190 - 14,125 pounds depending on experience, with
participation in the Universities Superannuation Scheme. Applicants must
have previous UNIX experience and preferably some of this should be at
the kernel level.
