Programmer/Analyst A position is available for a programmer analyst in the Human Communication Laboratories of the Boys Town National Institute for Communication Disord- ers in Children in Omaha, Nebraska. The laboratories conduct research in a wide range of disciplines related to diagnosis and treatment of disorders of hearing, speech and language. The staff includes 15 Ph.D.s, 2 other full-time programmers, 5 electronics technicians and 6 research assistants. The research group also provides technical support for a 25-person clinical staff. We currently have 12 PDP-11/34s and 11/23s running RT-11 and RSX for online control of experiments, signal processing, graphics, and data analysis and have funding (NSF and local money) for a VAX-11/750 running UNIX (we have an educational license from Bell Labs and plan to run Berkeley 4.2). The VAX will replace two smaller central timesharing systems that are currently running under RSX. We plan to network this machine to several of the other systems and to convert other applications to UNIX in the future. Our hardware support is excellent. The head of our electronics shop is a former DEC field service engineer and we configure and maintain our own systems. Funds are available for additional computer hardware as the need arises. We are considering, for example, the use of microprocessors as terminals or the use of 68000s as terminal concentrators as the next logi- cal step in expanding the central system. We are looking for a programmer/analyst with UNIX experience to run the new central system and to coordinate a smooth transition to it. This person would be responsible for day-to-day operation of the system, purchase of software (data-base software is a high priority), networking with the other systems, and training small numbers of new users. We have a number of Ph.D.s who do most of their own software development who have not had much experience with UNIX but are eager to learn. Optional responsibilities include supervision of the two full-time programmers and maintenance of the system software on the RT-11 and RSX systems. If you are interested in a position as the local authority on UNIX (as near as we can tell, you would be the authority in the entire state of Nebraska and perhaps several neighboring states as well), running a high-performance system in an interesting academic-research setting without students, please contact our manager of data processing: William Kelly Boys Town National Institute 555 North 30th Street Omaha, NE 68131 If you are in the Boston area and would like additional information con- cerning the Institute, please feel free to call a member of our staff on sabbatical at MIT: Walt Jesteadt (617) 253-2516, Research Laboratory of Electronics, MIT (617) 492-8832, After 5:00 PM
