let's call it world.politics and start a world distribution instead. It will take a bit of time for every site to add the distribution, but it's a step. -- Brad Templeton - Waterloo, Ontario (519) 886-7304

world.politics? Starting a flurry of world.* groups? Well, remember net.*? We shouldn't be so short sighted (after all, in a few years, there may be a USENET site on the Moon or (more likely, and this is not really joking) on an orbiting space station. Perhaps solar-system.* or even galaxy.* or universe.* ? only 1/2 :-) -- Randwulf (Randy Haskins); Path= genrad!mit-eddie!rh

The idea is pretty old. But coming up with it I would say (and I'm strongly in favour of it) to start building a world article structure by starting with world.politics. Why not starting it from the 1st of July. That is a nice date in 1984. It is right after the Salt Lake City conference... -- Teus Hagen teus@mcvax.UUCP (CWI, Amsterdam)

I think it is all very well to start building a world structure by creating a world.politics but if it is to become something useful then some form of standardization has to be implemented (horrors!). To create another distribution which goes world-wide and still keep net.* would just create even more confusion. What is needed is a decision to create a local north american distribution, e.g. na.*, as we have in Europe and then move all definitely american groups to it. Whether the rest are called net.* or world.* is really unimportant. But to have net.* and world.* co-existing is stupid. I think the time has arrived to admit that Usenet is longer a purely american network and make changes accordingly. This can be done by moving all world-wide groups or all american groups, but something has to be done. Relating to net.politics specifically, I feel that very much of so called "local politics" has a global interest and splitting a politics group to much could be harmful. The presidential election in the US is of interest to everyone, and the US should definitely be interested european politics. Robert Virding @ L M Ericsson, Stockholm
