[comp.ai.digest] Poetry composing programs

ALFONSEC@EMDCCI11.BITNET (10/29/88)

I know of work done in this area by J. Ruiz de Torres. The program
was written in APL/PC and generated blank verse in Spanish.
A book was published describing the system (also in Spanish):
"El Ordenador y la Literatura" (J. Ruiz de Torres), Siglo Cultural,
Madrid, 1987.
The program had a set of definitions of grammar structures (correct
sentences) and long lists of words. The result was quite
impressive, at least the first time you saw it.

I believe that Marie Borroff worked on a project to "teach a computer to write
poetry" something over a decade ago. My vague recollection is that she
concluded that such an effort can produce verse but not poetry. Sorry I don't
remember more. If you follow up on this, I would be interested in hearing
about it!

I don't even know whether she is on the net, let alone her electronic address.
But you can reach her through the English department of Yale University in New
Haven, Connecticut.
