THE FORMAL CALL FOR VOTES FOR A NEWSGROUP ON EXPERT SYSTEM SHELLS Bernd Bachmann, Harold Boley, Norbert Kratz, Robert Rehbold, Michael M. Richter, Peter Spieker, Thomas Wetter Paper address: Prof. Richter, FB Informatik, Univ. 675 Kaiserslautern, Box 3049, W. Germany Email address: lisplog@uklirb.uucp or ...!unido!uklirb!lisplog or in USA: ...!uunet!unido!uklirb!lisplog In a previous news in comp.ai.digest (Subject: ES Shell Newsgroup, Posted: Mon Dec 12 13:33:37 1988) we informally described the topics of a proposed newsgroup on the explosively expanding field of "shells" or "programming environments for knowledge engineering" (if you really can no longer access it, ask us for an email copy). We suggest to initiate this newsgroup in March/April '89, to call it comp.ai.shells, and to begin as its moderators. In our opinion, minimum moderation is necessary to prevent the newsgroup from being used as an advertisment medium. Nevertheless, companies will be invited to participate actively in the discussion, especially if their products permit large practical applications or are of deep theoretical interest. Two reoccuring subjects, which are being prepared, will be "Incremental Shell Bibliography" and "Incremental Shell Table". Since we have received many encouraging emails (thanks to all who replied) we hopefully will receive a surplus of 100 pro votes in favor of installing the new newsgroup within a month. Some people received our informal comp.ai.digest call in USENET in the redistributed AILIST form of BITNET and expressed their interest to redistribute the new shell group, too. Since we could not figure out how to organize redistribution, the only thing we can do is to ask those interested for a formal request for redistribution in addition to their pro vote. We will make available a list of these requests together with the votes in news.groups, hoping that some net gurus will organize redistribution to those additional nets with enough interested people. Please send your short pro or con vote concerning a USENET newsgroup comp.ai.shells, your possible request to redistribute it in some other net (please specify which one, say BITNET), and perhaps further suggestions to the above email address.
