From: Steve Dennett <DENNETT@SRI-NIC.ARPA> Greetings, I am currently looking at DTP systems to use for production of various documents ranging in size from a few pages to several hundred. One basic question I need to resolve is what hardware to run the system on. At this point the choices are either a SUN workstation, a Macintosh II, or an IBM AT (or clone). Yes, I know it's better to pick your software first, then get whatever it runs on. However, I'm under some pressure use either IBMs or SUNS, since that's what we already have. But my preference (at the moment) is for Mac IIs (when available), because I like their interface better than the IBMs, and if we get one I won't have to learn UNIX (as I would with a SUN). Anyway, I'm interested in opinions on the pros and cons of these three systems as the basis of a DTP system, factors both direct (hardware cost, reliability, usability, etc.) and indirect (availablity of other software, user-friendliness, etc.) that I should consider. If you will send messages directly to me, I will summarize them to the list. Finally, to keep this from going on forever, please try to respond on or before May 13th. I'll review and summarize replies around the beginning of the following week. Thanks for your help!
