I have a fairly good PostScript compression program that produces ASCII-only
characters, with non-ASCII as an option (but not CTRL-t, CTRL-j, CTRL-d, etc.)
It works especially well with halftones and bitmaps that have lots of white
and black space, or repeated patterns. I get about a 4 to 1 compression
on TARGA halftones. It's especially good when you know that the output
device has a limited number of grayscales (like the LaserWriter with 32),
as you can do a little of the halftoning on the host by rounding the bytes
to some number of grays that is slightly greater than the number you're
getting (factoring in, of course, any scaling that is performed on the
image). h
