No. You will NEED at least a PC/AT class machine. Pagemaker will not run
otherwise (so sayeth the box; I've not bothered testing it yet).

Ventura will run on a stockPC, but I don't recommend it. Too slow.

> 2) Does Pagemaker require EGA?

No. But you'll want at least EGA (640x350) resolution. Better still to
get one of the EGA+ boards (like the Video-7 Vega Delux board) which can
give you resolution of up to 640x480 -or- 734x340 in 16 colors out of a
64 color palete on either the NEC MultiSync or Sony MultiSpeed monitors.

> 3) Is a LaserJet adequate or will a upgrade to a LaserJet Plus be required?

I couldn't say--I haven't had a chance to test it yet. If the LaserJet
turns out to not be adequate, don't bother with the LJ-plus; go straight
to either an Apple LaserWriter, or the new LaserJet/2.

In another article, someone asks if EGA resolution is enough for Pagemaker.
I'd say yes. Although if you can go to EGA+ (some call it SuperEGA; others
claim [falsely] that it's PGA reoslution), I'd recommend spending the
extra $$ for the greater resolution.

In a previous article I said that PageMaker on a 10Mhz AT was very slow.
I've since talked with Aldus, and straightened a few things out. PageMaker
is very slow if it's not the only thing running under windows (ie if you
had the DOS window running as well); but if not, speed isn't more than
20% slower than a Macintosh in general. Also there is a newer version
of Pagemaker (version 1.0a) that uses the newer runtime verison of Windows
which should help speed things up a bit more.

I have been using PageMaker on my Stock PC with CGA for several weeks -
bought it on a money-back basis due to the "AT" requirement on the box-
but it is like a company saying you need such-and-such size car to pull
their trailer - something smaller may work but you may be sorry.
I'm not sorry - I'm having a blast. Sure, wish I had an AT, but don't
AVOID PageMaker just because you don't have an AT.
My real dilemma: while this is just a learning experience, and we are
supposedly going to get an IBM laser soon at work, I would LOVE to have
better output at home than supplied by my JX-80 (FX-80 compatible).
Heck, Fancy Font, NicePrint, and other packages do EXCELLENT high res
output on it, too bad the windows driver is a "single pass" type.
Any feedback on the best price performer short of a $2400 laser ($1700
LJ-II and $700 2M memory board)? How about the 24-pin printers?
P.S. there's an ALDUS sig on Compuserve - another excellent PageMaker
resource.
