I agree that "Pocket Pal" is a must.

Another selection I have found helpful to a novice is "the Complete
Desktop Publisher" by Daniel J. Makuta and William F. Lawrence.  Their
perspective is neutral and direct - get the job done.  The book is a
comprehensive reference guide that gets into the nitty-gritty, but keeps
is simple.  The book covers definitions, techniques, printing, scanning,
database publishing, copy prep, layout and design...
