A friend has asked me find out what packages are out there that will allow him to write material using the Greek alphabet. Ideally a WYSIWYG package would be nice, but if there are fonts that can be used by DTP or WP programs, we would also be interested. Are there such fonts for TeX? At the moment, we are only interested in the PC world but answers from the Mac camps will readily be entertained. Answers to comp.text should you beleive the info to be of general interest otherwise: ...!ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!pgil pgil@sphinx.UChicago.edu Paul Gilna, Ben May Institute University of Chicago (312) 702-6971 ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop%plaid@sun.com -OR- sun!plaid!desktop Administrivia to: desktop-request%plaid@sun.com -OR- sun!plaid!desktop-request Paths: {ihnp4,decwrl,hplabs,seismo,ucbvax}!sun --- Chuq "Fixed in 4.0" Von Rospach chuq@sun.COM Delphi: CHUQ

For what it is worth -- SoftCraft has several Greek fonts as I recall, and if you buy their LaserFonts package (or several others, I think, but this one for sure) you also get the Hershey database and a primitive font editor. I am very pleased with the general quality of their products, and the basic fonts come several per $15 disk. I bought a Hebrew font from them that is quite useful. Warning - they are not currently WYSIWYG. BUT - they are coming out with in the very near future (may even have already been released) a utility to make Windows screen fonts, which means you get WYSIWYG with PageMaker, Windows Write, etc. I don't have their address with me at the moment, but I can easily get it if you need it. They also advertise in several magazines. I also bought their version of Bitstream's outline fonts and am quite happy with them. The *only* gripe I have (and I need to write them a letter about it) is that they provide a utility to change fonts from their format to HP downloadable format, but not vice versa, and you can only use their editor on fonts in their format. Arrrgh. If you buy their $290 full-featured font editor, they provide the additional utility for HP to SC. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - if I can answer them I will. One last nice note about SoftCraft - they have an 800 number for questions and orders. They also have helpful, knowledgeable people answering the phone. I got my order very promptly and it was even correct! :-) Hey, if I can get Hebrew to work, Greek should be a piece of cake! ( BIG :-) ) On a *slightly* different topic, I don't know if anyone else has had the same problem, but while I was shopping for fonts I contacted Bitstream. I got a singularly unhelpful person at the other end of the phone (which was not easy to get to since it always seemed to be busy) who didn't know the product she was supposed to be selling. It took almost *2 months* for any product literature to reach me, by which time I had given up waiting and purchased it from SoftCraft. The font package that I received from SoftCraft was completely (as far as I can tell) resold from whatever Bitstream sent them. SoftCraft's name only appeared on the outline generator, not on the outlines. I.e., don't bother talking to Bitstream at all unless you are in a big hurry to use the outlines with Ventura and can't wait for SoftCraft's newest product (I think the name is WYSI Fonts). ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop%plaid@sun.com -OR- sun!plaid!desktop Administrivia to: desktop-request%plaid@sun.com -OR- sun!plaid!desktop-request Paths: {ihnp4,decwrl,hplabs,seismo,ucbvax}!sun

There is a company in Madison WI which deals directly with foriegn/scientific characters of all types. They have 2 products: 1. Full blown word processor. Good for editing real scientific type papers. Doesn't compare to MS-word, WP or VW in regular tasks (although it is usable). 2. TSR type program which works with most of the popular word processors. It sits between your keyboard and your screen, as well as between your computer and your printer. Does all the interpretation you can think of allowing you to see the chars on the screen (ROM needed if you don't have a graphics board). Works with all the popular hardware (video/printers).
