Fellow DTPs:
A recent message regarding two books on printing "theory" caught my eye.
I too am interested in good books about printing. My goal is to set up a
small reference shelf of about 10 titles covering such things as
page layout, font selection, font design, layout of tables, effective
illustrations,, and so forth. Basically any aesthetic considerations
involved in printing and typesetting. I am not interested in
package-specific books (e.g. "How to Use Pagemaker") or grammar books.
If anyone out there has a favorite book, I'd like to hear about it.
Also, I have not been able to find the two books mentioned last week
("Publications Design" and "On Advertizing"). Could whoever posted
that message--I've since filed it into oblivion--please send
me the publishers and copyright dates? Also, are these books still in
print?
There was also a hint that such a list of books may have been
compiled at one time, as the wording used was to the effect of,
"here are two books to ADD to the list." If there is a wide-ranging list
already being maintained, I'd like to know about it.
Reviews and opinions are welcome, but go beyond the call of duty. All I'm
asking for are titles and authors (and publishers if you have that too.)
Thank you very much.

The book is not called "On Advertizing," it's called "Ogilvy on Advertising." (I'm not sure about the s/z, but I'm sure his name is the first word.) It's a great book, I recommend it highly, but I think tells more about advertizing design than about publication design in general. Also, the book is quite biased toward the Ogilvy and Mather style; they have proven it works, but I'm glad that there are other styles. I assume that most people will take his advice with a grain of salt, lest they just end up mimicking his distinctive style. Maybe half a grain of salt is sufficient, it's well-proven advice. I don't have the book handy here at work, but I'm pretty sure it's still in print (in paperback), I know it's still on the shelves. Let me know if you don't get the Publisher/ISBN, I'll mail it to you. I'd read it just for fun and nostalgia, and to see how a genius works. A little book I like very much is "Rhyme & Reason: A Typographic Novel"
by Erik Spiekermann of MetaDesign, published by H. Berthold AG, Berlin, 1987.
An English translation by Spiekermann himself is available, probably
from Berthold's New York office - (201) 564-8972.
I recommend it to anyone looking for an introduction to the aesthetic
elements of print design.
