Here is a questios from a friend of mine. ...The client is creating documents using Interleaf typesetting software on a Sun. He's driving a 300 dpi laser printer. The problem is how to get typeset quality output (1275 dpi or better) from the same files. My impression is that "Interleaf" is both the brand name of a computer- based publishing system and a page description language similar to Postscript. If I'm right, the problem boils down to finding a model of typesetter that accepts documents written in Interleaf (the page description language), and then finding such a typographer who has such a typesetter and accepts files on Sun media. Although you do not say which laser printer you are driving, I'm assuming that with your Suns, you also have a LaserWriter printer. In this case, InterLeaf must produce a PostScript program which renders your pages on the LaserWriter. The LaserWriter does not understand the InterLeaf internal format directly. If there is a printer which prints directly from some InterLeaf internal format, I haven't heard of it. In any case, you should be able to take the PostScript produced by InterLeaf, and send it directly to any other PostScript printer, and get equivalent results, within the resolution offered by the printer. For high resolution output, you may want to search out a local print shop with a Linotronic typesetter, which understands PostScript. The Linotronic 100 offers about 1200 dpi, and the Linotronic 300 provides 2540 dpi. These machines are expensive, and renting time may be expensive too. If you are rendering scaled bitmaps, this could really be expensive. I heard that a full page image can take up to 10 hours to render on a Linotronic, since the amount of data is so massive (603,224,600 bits for 8.5 x 11 at 2540 dpi).
