[comp.text.desktop] EPS file generation from PageMaker

fleishman-glenn@cs.yale.edu (Glenn Fleishman) (04/19/88)

Have hope! An easy solution appeared in the April 1988 issue of MacWorld.
I believe this function is very poorly documented, but you can create
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) files from your Mac and then simply
output the EPS file through a PS spooler to your LaserWriter, without
PM3.0. Here's how: Select your output device on chooser as a LaserWriter
(make sure you have the correct drivers, Aldus Prep, etc.) regardless
of the fact you're not hooked up to one. Set up your print
menu so that it's correct, including driver use, etc. Then -- here's
the nifty part -- hold down the command (clover) key WHILE clicking
on PRINT button. This will generate another window you've probably
never dreamed of. (I've been using PM 3 years and never heard of it).
This window gives you output options for a EPS file. If you're using
a non-resident font for the LaserWriter, select download font --
it will encapsulate it as part of the EPS file. If the SE with the
LaserWriter doesn't have Aldus Prep select the include file box. Other
options are self-explanatory. It may take a little fooling, but since
you have a hard drive, you shouldn't have memory problems. One thing, though,
I think it needs the full Meg of memory to operate -- i.e., no
multi-finder or cached memory. I may be wrong, as I have a Plus with
one drive and a RamDisk. PostScript spoolers are available in many places.
Also the EPS file could be placed into PM2.0 and output from there, but
that is a bit repetitive. You might post your success/failure with
this technique here, as I think -- and I hope the moderator agrees --
it would have great interest to PM3.0 and other users.

Another note: I saw this in another group recently. If you hold down
option WHILE selecting print from any applications with the LW selected
as the output device, and then, after selecting PRINT or OK for that
window, one immediately holds down the 'f' key, a similar window
is generated that outputs PostScript code to an EPS file on your disk.
I've tried it and it seems to work fine. I believe it is part
of the new Laserdrivers (4.0? or possibly earlier). Pagemaker's window,
however, is custom to PM.
