[comp.text.desktop] DCA file format; MS-Word file format

news@sun.uucp (news) (04/20/88)

In order to carry some texts typed in with MS-Word on PC to handle them with
Framemaker, PAO on a SUN workstation, I'm desperately looking for a description
of the IBM DCA file format (Including a list of GFID font ID's).

If we can't transport it via DCA, then we'll need a description of MS-Word III
file format.

We have to keep text attributes like italics, footnotes and so on.

Thanks in advance

According to the literature I have on FrameMaker, it's supposed to
have filters to allow automatic input from MS Word as well as other
products. I was assuming that this is true; I'll ask my rep if it
isn't true...

By the way, I was considering a purchase of FrameMaker. However, I
have a rather complicated document structure which requires
conditional text (if I want to produce document A, include text A,
otherwise include text B). FrameMaker doesn't currently do this (it's
supposedly in the works), but I know they have a macro facility. For
those of you who have the package, do you think the macro facility
would allow me to do this?

If not, does anyone know of a wysiwyg (well, we all know that they're
not *really* wysiwyg, but...) publishing system which allows this?

MicroSoft guards the file format of Word like the United States guards gold at
Ft. Knox. Except MicroSoft is more paranoid. DCA is a published standard.

[[ Actually, qualified vendors CAN license the file format. Contact
Microsoft for details. The key word there is qualified, though.
And it doesn't include the access algorithms, just the format,
so accessing stuff in "fast save" format can have performance
problems. And better be ready to sign non-disclosures and all
sorts of other neat stuff. But it can be done -- chuq ]
