[comp.text.desktop] Interleaf's Desktop Technical Publishing Software

sllu@venera.isi.edu (Shih-Lien Lu) (04/26/88)

I had terrible experience with Interleaf's desktop technical publishing
software running on a SUN. It has a dangerous bug. I have several
files striked by this bug and cannot be recovered. The main symptom
being an "unrecognizable record" when loading the file. Has anyone
besides me got bitten by this bug?

Well, we've been using Interleaf 3.0 on Suns for about a year now, and
have never seen this one. To date I have seen a file lost only once,
and that was due to a hardware problem forcing us to reboot a station.
Well, twice, because the new un*x has a bug and our computer center
can't do remote backiups via TCP/IP without rebooting our server - fix
on the way.

We've used 3 stations for over a year, VERY heavily. We have just
added 4 more. The system is pretty reliable overall.

I would suggest bugging Interleaf to get you the latest version of 3.0,
which is 3.18 I believe. I know, I know, their Mass. customer support
is surly at best and merely disorganized always; it all depends on your
local office. Unfortunately, THEY have to rely on Cambridge. . .

You might also question the environment you are running in. If your
Sun is part of a networked system, could someone else be bugging your
underlying un*x?
