[comp.text.desktop] QMS PS-810

hpoppe@SCDPYR.ucar.edu (Herb Poppe) (04/30/88)

I have several questions about the QMS PS-810 laser printer.

1) When I print to the 810 from a Mac, I can (via Page Setup...) select
(bitmap) smoothing. However, the bitmap is not smoothed. When I print
the same file on an Apple LaserWriter Plus, the file is smoothed. Doesn't
the 810 do smoothing; are LaserWriters the only PostScript printers
that do smoothing? How do I get the 810 to do smoothing?

2) I would like to connect an Apollo workstation to the 810 via the DB-25
connector at the same time that the 810 is connected to LocalTalk. The
810 has a thumbwheel switch that must be set to "3" for LocalTalk and
to some other number for the RS-232 port. Is changing the switch position
sufficient to disconnect the printer from LocalTalk and connect it to
RS-232 or must I also remove the LocalTalk cable from the printer?
Conversely, must I remove the RS-232 cable from the DB-25 port when
   I switch to LocalTalk.

3) I would like to get a telephone number that could get me in touch
   with Technical Support at QMS.

The manual implies that when you are physically connected to AppleTalk
(I assume "LocalTalk" is synonymous), the switch must stay set to 3 at
all times. "A mistake in the switch setting could bring down the entire
network", it says.
