Fatal exit codes come from little pieces of error-checking code inside Windows and indicate that things are unrecoverably screwed up. You can get a list of the fatal exit codes and their meanings from the Windows developers's forum on GEnie. One of the most common is 007, which means an invalid window handle. They're usually caused by program bugs. As an end user you can't prevent them. You could try making sure there's plenty of free memory, since low-memory conditions will trigger many intermittent bugs. You really shouldn't be getting them at all. As far as I know, the error-checking code which produces fatal exits exists only in the debugging version of Windows distributed to developers. If the retail version encounters a serious problem it simply locks up your machine. The only real solution is to move your work to a stable windowing environment like the Mac.
