[comp.text.desktop] Unix, LaserWriters, TeX, HELP

alan@uunet.UU.NET (05/16/88)

I have a problem with the new unencrypted Postscript fonts from Adobe
and using them in association with TeX, Unix and an Apple Laserwriter Plus.
Now that Adobe has come out with fonts that are not in the ROM of the
Laserwriter Plus (e.g. Melior) our dvi to postscript translator must
download these fonts to the printer as needed.

With the old encrypted fonts there was an option in the font
initializer to create an ascii readable version of the font that could
be downloaded through any serial line when being used, the new fonts
have no such option. I have transferred a new font file onto our Unix
system using MacTerminal and macget and found out, to my distress, that
the font is stored in a binary format (after an ASCII readable header).
I attempted to send this file to the Laserwriter which is connected to
our Unix system through a serial line and no luck, the font just died.

Does anyone have any experience with these new fonts and how I might
be able to create a version of these fonts that I can download from
my Unix system?
