My brother is publishing a 40- to 50-page monthly magazine (_U. S. Toy Collector Magazine_) with an electronic justifying typewriter as his main typesetting tool. He would like to move to computerized composition, but is not sure what kind of system he should buy. Since he lives in Missoula, Montana, his chance of getting sound advice is pretty poor. He did go to one dealer, who extolled the virtues of an IBM- based system. They did a simple typesetting demonstration for him that took them 18 minutes. When he asked them to do the same thing on the Mac SE they had, they moaned and groaned a bit, but humored him -- taking six minutes to do the same demonstration (one third of the time required on the IBM!). My brother feels that the Mac (either an SE or a Mac-II) would be the best tool for the job, along with a laser printer. I am knowledgeable about computers, but have not used desktop publishing systems at all, so I cannot advise him. If you use a desktop publishing system (or systems), please send me email detailing your opinion of the system he should purchase, including: ==> What computer should he use? ==> Does he need a hard disk? If so, what size is the minimum and what size should he really have? ==> What kind of software would allow him to produce a 40- to 50-page magazine? ==> What kind of laser printer should he buy? Thanks for any help you can provide (remember: email, please!).
