As of Dec. 1987 the definitive source of information on the .PCX format was "Technical Documentation for PC Paintbrush, PC Paitbrush +, and Frieze Graphics" by ZSoft Corporation. At the time, it was free for the asking. I'd assume that it or an updated version is still available.
