[comp.text.desktop] Getting to a laser printer from a Compugraphic

NU092254@uunet.UU.NET (Brian Dall) (07/15/88)

Here's the setup: 2 CompuGraphic PowerView 10s
                   1 CompuGraphic MCS 8400 typesetter
1 PC-AT compatible with Ventura and Pagemaker
1 Macintosh II with XPress and Pagemaker
                   1 Apple LaserWriter II NTX
access to either TOPS or AppleTalk networking

Now, the problem: I can get any of the 3 front end systems to output
on the 8400, and I can obviously output from both the PC-AT and the
Macintosh II to the LaserWriter.

What I need to do is get the PowerView 10s to give me output on the
LaserWriter for proofing. The 8400 uses expensive RC (Resin Coated)
paper and a chemical developing system. Obviously the LaserWriter
outputs on plain paper and it would save me a bundle to do my proofing
on that instead of the 8400. It doesn't have to look good at all, but
the placement must be close and it should be at least somewhat readable
for proofing purposes. I'm not worried if it has to scale fonts or use
rasterized screen fonts or whatever, but I need to get it there.

CompuGraphic says we don't sell LaserWriters, buy our $10,000+ proofing
system. Obviously uneconomical.

People who write software for the Macintosh ask what the output from a
PowerView looks like. (It is mostly ASCII, with some special characters
above 127, and it has codes like <FT10> in it to change to font 10, etc.)

So far the only (painfull) way of doing it is to interpret the codes
while importing the ASCII text into Ventura. This isn't really satisfac-
tory because there is no guarantee that the spacing, etc. would be even
close to the way that it will look when it is finally typeset.

Has ANYONE please have any better ideas or know of someone who sells a
reasonably priced hardware/software solution for printing my proofs on
the LaserWriter?? Help!
       take care,
                                     -Bri
