Does anybody have a summary of the new features available in WP 5.0? In particular: Does it do a better job of laserwriter inter-word spacing than WP 4.2 does? Is there a greater selection of laserwriter fonts? Can postscript files (diagrams) be merged into a document without great wizardry? Any other comments/references would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop@plaid.sun.com Administrivia to: desktop-request@plaid.sun.com UUCP: {amdahl,decwrl,hplabs,ihnp4}!sun!plaid!desktop{-request} Archives can be gotten from the archive-server. I am just switching over to WP 5.0 which looks to be a well thought out compromise between a word processing package suited to authors and a desktop publishing system....just a few little problems and I would greatly appreciate some help or a referral to an alternate newsgroup...and yes, I know about the wordperfect helpline. 1. WP 5.0 is supposed to support the inclusion of postscript files within graphics windows. The manual says little about the format of the postscript file other than it being encapsulated postscript and having the correct %! comment at the top. I have tried to include lots of different variants (almost null files) but WP keeps complaining about the format. Does anybody know the magic incantation? If so, could you please forward a copy of a skeleton postscript file that works? Is the filename sacred? 2. Is there an easy way to get MacDraw to produce a postscript file that I can transfer to my IBM and include in my WP document? I am not a MAC user and as near as I can tell the "default" laserwriter driver doesn't have a "print to file" option. We do have a pagemaker driver with that option but I haven't tried using it yet. 3. Either WP 5.0 or my AT clone (an Olivetti M280) has a bug that appears when saving files using the Text IN/OUT (DOS) feature. The second time you save a file the file length gets set to zero. Funny things happen thereafter and if you really persist disk clusters go amissing. I can live with this one but thought I would pass on a warning. Thanks for any help/referrals. ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop@plaid.sun.com Administrivia to: desktop-request@plaid.sun.com UUCP: {amdahl,decwrl,hplabs,ihnp4}!sun!plaid!desktop{-request} Archives can be gotten from the archive-server. As to the Text I/O *AND* saving in older WP4.2 version, the following occurs (even according to WP Corp themselves): The data IS saved, but the directory (FAT?) is not updated until you LEAVE WP. If you save a text or 4.2 file to floppy for an associate while they stand over you then go back to your application while they scurry off with the disk (for the uninformed this is the WALKNET LAN protocol), they will look at a disk with ZERO bytes on that file. The data is there, but DOS won't find it. IF you had LEFT WP before removing disk then removed the disk, you would have your file intact... WP customer reps say that an update is coming "any day now" and all will get it at the same time. Personally, my company bought one update, found that bug, and decided that Manuscript wasn't that bad after all. -- Charles Lord cjl@ecsvax.UUCP Usenet Cary, NC cjl@ecsvax.BITNET Bitnet #include <std.disclamers> #include <cutsey.quote> ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop@plaid.sun.com Administrivia to: desktop-request@plaid.sun.com UUCP: {amdahl,decwrl,hplabs,ihnp4}!sun!plaid!desktop{-request} Archives can be gotten from the archive-server. It sounds to me that the subject of postscript has recieved fairly short thrift in the WP manual. The postscript format, or the encapsulated postscript format (which is what WP probably wants) has a bit more to it than that. There is a variety of information on PS file formats available from the Adobe Postscript File Server (adobe!ps-file-server@sun.com), send the usual one line message of "help" for more info. The only way I know of to send postscript to diskfile on a Mac is through an obscure part of the print command in Aldus Pagemaker. If you hold down the command and option keys when you hit the "print" button in the print dialogue box, you will get another undocumented dialogue box offering you print to disk options. I'm not sure, but I think this is a part of the Aldus Prep print driver. I have tried, unsuccessfully to print to disk from Cricket Draw and a couple of other packages, and Pagemaker seems to be the only one this works in. Anybody using WP 5.0 with a PostScript printer (in the U.S. at least, where you can use WPCorp's toll-free number) probably should call them and ask for "Printer Disk 6." It has further printer support. It's also free. --Jon Radel jonradel%icecream.princeton.edu@princeton.edu ---------------------------------------- Submissions to: desktop@plaid.sun.com Administrivia to: desktop-request@plaid.sun.com UUCP: {amdahl,decwrl,hplabs,ihnp4}!sun!plaid!desktop{-request} Archives can be gotten from the archive-server.
