[comp.text.desktop] Ventura Fonts

news@sun.uucp (news) (11/20/88)

Nov. 11 dunnett@mala.bc.ca (Malcolm Dunnett) asked:

"We are using Ventura Publisher and printing to an HP LaserJet II"
"printer. My problem is that the set of fonts provided with Ventura"
"is a bit too limited for our purposes."

"We are using the Swiss and Dutch typefaces and would like to have"
"normal, bold and italic in the larger sizes ( 14,18 and 24 pt ), but"
"only bold seems to be provided. It would also be nice to have these"
"typefaces in a few different sizes ( eg 9pt, 11pt, 16pt, 30pt )."

"Could someone please tell me where I can get the additional sizes"
"and weights for these typefaces. Thanks in Advance"

Computing Now magazine (Sept. 88) had a review of HP laser
downloadable fonts by Qume. The author of the article (S.R.
Ferrybridge) listed 16 font families available (ie Times,
Helvetica, Futura, Univers, etc.) in sizes 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,
14, 18, 24, 30, and 36 in four faces each (i.e. medium, italic,
bold and ultrabold). The article says the fonts can be purchased
with an installation package tailored for Ventura (MS Windows
package also available) which installs the fonts from their
compressed format and creates a proper Ventura width table
(.WID). I haven't used them, so I can't vouch for the article.
Computing Now (416) 445-5600. Qume (408) 942-4000.

Don't neglect HP's own fonts. Some of their downloadable Times
and Helvetica fonts (AE and AF series) include odd sizes (like
7, 9, and 11) and larger fonts (18, 24, 30) in bold, italic, and
medium. To get these to work with Ventura, you'll need to use
Ventura's font conversion utility to generate your WID file. The
documentation on this is straightforward and accurate. I trashed
all my standard Ventura fonts and replaced them with the
slightly typographically superior HP AC and AD series fonts. It
wasn't that difficult, though it takes a little time.

P.S. Here's a tip on another subject. Even before I changed my
fonts, I got fed up with Ventura's Dutch and Swiss font names.
I never knew for certain which was Times and which was Helvetica
without looking at them. If you have Norton Utilities, it is
real easy to edit the OUTPUT.WID file to change the names. I did
with no resulting problems.

Happy fonting.
