A friend of mine works for a large state agency. He composes documents on an SE in his office, prints them out on a Laserwriter, then hand-carries them to another building where they are first scanned, then printed on a Compugraphic MCS 8400. The MCS 8400 has the capability of direct transfer of files via modem. The sender is required to insert some formatting commands before certain lines of text. For example, "*3" before a paragraph will cause it to be printed in boldface on the 8400. The problem is, he can't get it to work right. He composes files in both MacWrite and WordPerfect and sends them successfully, but on the Compugraphic end, they come out as garbage. ANY help as to how to do this would be GREATLY appreciated. When you say that he does things in MacWrite, how does he save the file? He needs to save the file as "Text Only" or "Text Only With Line Breaks" (these are the MS Word save option names). The native file format for MacWrite or Word is no-doubt garbage-looking. Also, he needs to make sure that he is using an error-correction protocol if he is sending over noisy lines and if the CompuGraphic supports it. Wayne Folta (folta@tove.umd.edu 128.8.128.42)
