In re printing to disk, sending the PostScript file to a disk file is a standard part of the FrameMaker "Print" dialog box, including space to write in the full pathname of the output file (with the document pathname plus ".ps" supplied as a default). On the NeXT, there is also an option to direct the output to the NeXT's PostScript-previewer application for on-screen preview instead of printing. In re transfer of files, we are routinely exchanging files between writers who use FM on the Sun, writers using FM on NeXT, and outside contracters who use FM on the Mac and on the Sun (386i). There are only two effects noticeable. When you open a document on one system that was saved on another, you sometimes get a warning that "this document was formatted using different font metrics." We have noticed no visible difference between documents despite this; if there are different line breaks they are extremely rare. Two, when FM on the Mac opens a document for which it doesn't have an appropriate font, it substitutes Times. This is automatically recovered to the original font when the document is returned to the Sun or NeXT except for one case: if the writer updates the paragraph catalog while on the Mac, the font "Times" gets recorded as the default font for subsequent uses of that paragraph style. Then a one-step manual procedure ("use formats from" a master document) is required to restore the changed fonts to the catalog and document.
