[comp.text.desktop] FrameMaker Mailing List

mark@DRD.Com (Mark Lawrence) (07/20/90)

This seems to come up now and again. I am the administrator of the
mailing list for FrameMaker users. In addition, there is a fairly active
organization in the Silicon Valley called Frame Users' Network (FUN).
Contact Dirk van Nouhuys <dirk@Eng.Sun.Com> for more info. The standard
blurb I send out to those who subscribe to 'framers' attached:

Welcome to the Framers Mailing List. Please read the following:

'framers' is a users forum for sharing of experiences and
information about the FrameMaker desktop publishing package from
    Frame Technologies.

    Administrative
    Contact: framers-request@DRD.Com
      <or> your friendly neighbourhood postmaster

    Submissions: framers@DRD.Com

*** This list is NOT moderated! ***
***********************************************************************

Anything mailed to the Submissions address *will* be echoed to everyone
on the list (which means very potential contributer/poster is on his or
her honor to not abuse this list). You do not have to send postings to
the Administrative Contact address. In general, I don't consider it my
job to assess the post-worthiness of a submission. The exception to
this rule of thumb are communications of an administrative nature ("add
me", "delete me", "how do I reach so-and-so...", etc.). That's why we
call it "Administrative Contact".

Above all, please DO NOT mail "please remove me" requests to the
Submissions address! Your hair will fall out and you will contract
athelete's foot if you do. If you don't know how you got on
distribution, contact your local postmaster and ask if you are being
carried on a local alias for 'framers'.

Some sites have 'framers' set up as a newsgroup. If you are reading this
via news, please note that if you post, your article will likely be
sent to the *entire* distribution. If you have something to say of an
administrative nature, you must MAIL to the Administrative Contact
address, not POST. If you intend to post and your local software
breaks (i.e., it doesn't send the article out), you can mail the
article to the Submissions address and it will get posted.

Please DO NOT mail "My mail to you bounced, Joe Blow -- please send me..."
requests to the submissions address. Send address queries to 'framers-request'
first and then if all else fails, the list maintainer will attempt the
contact for you (so you don't get nasty-grams from other subscribers).

Sorry to be so pedantic, but the reason for the foregoing is that many
people have 'framers' messages sent directly to their personal mailboxes.
Messages need to be held to a minimum. Therefore, administrivia should
be handled by private e-mail.

To help hold down unnecessary messages, a specific policy has been adopted
regarding the posting of questions and their answers. A person who sends a
question in to this list is expected to collect, summarize, and post the
answers to that question. In this way, all readers may benefit from the
answers. A "summary" is not merely a concatenation of all responses: at the
very least duplicate answers should be filtered out, and some information on
the results of the original posters implementation of the suggestions would
also be beneficial. It would also be nice if the original poster kept a
copy of this summary in case the question comes up again in a few months.

Similarly, ALL ANSWERS to a question should be sent ONLY TO THE
ORIGINAL POSTER. They should NOT be CC-ed to the entire list. PLEASE
take the time to double check your reply to insure that the list will
not receive a copy (watch that gratuitous use of the 'R' key!). This
is the best way to hold down the traffic in this medium.

Messages sent to this list are NOT archived.

If you have any questions or corrections about this message, please send
them to <framers-request@DRD.Com>
