[comp.text.desktop] Ventura to fax board

v105mahs@ubvmsd.cc.buffalo.edu (Peter P Donohue) (10/13/90)

Anyone have experience with Ventura Publisher and fax cards? I am
trying to save/print something from Ventura to a file which I can then
fax with the card.
   I am working on a 20 mhz 386 running MS-DOS v3.3 and Ventura Desk
Top Publisher v2.0. I have an internal send only fax (bought from JDR
Microdevices, built by Prometheus) installed. The fax card can send
files in any one of the following formats: ASCII, TIFF, IMG, FAX, PCX,
DCX, and Tiff-F.
I would like to take advantage of many of Ventura's page layout and
graphic import capabilities, so Ascii is not possible. I have saved
files to postscript and believe that I should be able to save them to
HPG. Does anyone know of a way to save/print a chapter to any one of
the other formats?
   Thanks for any help.

                                     Pete

Peter, the only way I know to do this is to send the text as ASCII and the pics separate as PCX or TIFF files. You could HIJAACK the page screens as TIFFs, I guess, but the files would be about 500K each page!!

Here's another method.

We* use Pagemaker to write out a PostScript file. (Ventura would work
equally well.) The PostScript is fed to an interpreter that creates a TIFF
file. Our fax broadcaster likes PCX, so we run the TIFF file through
another converter, then send it across a LAN to the fax broadcaster.

The interpreter is GammaScript, an OEM version of UltraScript, which is a
QMS/Imagen clone of PostScript. UltraScript is widely available for PCs,
Ataris, etc. It has a wide variety of printer drivers. I imagine that
postmaster@imagen.UUCP can give you phone numbers and/or addresses for
more information.
