[comp.text.desktop] transition from troff to ???

raj@cbnewsl.att.com (Richard A. Johnson) (11/10/90)

Like several other people who have posted articles in this newsgroup
recently, I too am faced with the proposition of transitioning from
troff to some kind of desktop publishing software.

My organization has been using troff for many years, but we just
purchased 6 Sun SPARCstation 1+ machines and I am going to be
evaluating Framemaker and Interleaf as a possible replacement for
troff.

Besides the ease-of-use issue, which I will determine by trying
the products myself, I am trying to find out if there is a way to
convert either Framemaker or Interleaf documents to troff format
and vice-versa. Converting to troff would allow us at Bell Labs
to submit our documents to the library network electronically,
and converting from troff would allow someone with a Sun to view
a document that was written by someone without a Sun.

If anybody has information about this, please send me mail. Also,
if there is a product other than Framemaker or Interleaf that I
should be looking at for the SPARCstation, let me know.

Thanks,
Rich Johnson

There was also a query a few weeks ago about PostScript
previewers.
There is a program called pageview that Sun includes
with its OPEN LOOK distribution which displays PostScript
on screen. Anyone with DWB 3.1 troff can do:
	troff ... | dpost | pageview
to get on-screen documents. There is also a "ditview" program
on the X11R4 tape that goes straight from troff:
	troff -TX75 ... | ditview
The advantage of the former is that it permits pictures
and displays all fonts; the latter does not.
