[comp.text.desktop] FrameMaker questions

kremer@cs.utwente.nl (Harro Kremer) (02/28/91)

Hello,

I've gotten quite fond of FrameMaker, but have some problems:
BTW: I'm using FrameMaker 2.1X (X window version).

1) When I make figures, I would like the caption to be in the figure,
but the paragraph numbering gets messed up. Sometimes FrameMaker starts
with a new value for the counter used in the paragraph number.
What should I do to keep the numbering correct ?

2) I made a bibliography using FrameMaker using cross-references. When I
want to insert a cross-reference in my text, Scrolling through the
references by clicking the left mouse button in the scroll-bar make the
paragraphs seem out of order.
It seems that this problem does not occur after I did an 'update
internal references'.
Any Help ?

3) How do I specify a geometry when starting imaker?

Thanks in advance,

What number series are you using for your figure numbers? If you use the
same ones as for the section headings, you will get messed up.

After much struggling with this, we found the best solution to be this:

1. Put a small text column INSIDE the anchored frame. This text column
will contain 1 paragraph - the caption.

	+-------------------+
	| |
	| |
	| |<-------Anchored frame
	| |
	| |
	| +--------------+ |
	| |Fig 1 Drawing|<----------Text column
	| +--------------+ |
	+-------------------+

2. Select the small text column and use Format>Flow to give the small column
the same flow designation as the flow in which the frame is anchored.

3. Make a paragraph tag just for figures, with an auto-number of
"F:Figure <n+>"
or something appropriate. Use a separate numbering series (such as "F") for
this tag, to keep it separate from other numbers.

Note that if you are working on a multi-file book, things can get more
complicated. But setting up the small column to have the same flow is
important.

The most complex problem we had was trying to get "C-N" numbers, such as
"2-5~ for the fifth figure in chapter 5. It seems impossible to us to get
both numbers to be generated automatically. Looks simple, gets complex
in practice.
