Yea. Although I had not yet unsubscribed to general, the long article on smoking did it. Seems that a fair number of submissions to the net lately are deliberate attempts to irritate other net users, especially in net.general and net.jokes. The only answer to such behavior is to ignore it, or remove the temptation. Remove net.general. Rick Coates tektronix!iddic!rickc

<Don't do it> I had unsubscribed to this newsgroup before, but resubscribed recently when I was bored (I think it was when GENRAD was going to 4.2, and we didn't get much news, and I needed a fix...). I was pleasantly suprised to find that it was MUCH better about appropriateness and volume than it had been, say, 9 months ago (it was probably about 6 months ago that I unsubscribed; I am entirely too tolerant, sometimes). I don't find the current volume difficult to deal with at all, and the appropriateness factor is somewhere around 30-50% (just shooting from the hip...). I don't really see the need for nuking this newsgroup. -- Randwulf (Randy Haskins); Path= genrad!mit-eddie!rh

If we follow your logic, let's remove net.jokes also, and net.flame, and net.religion, and net.politics..... The behavior you mention is part of the USENET video-game. There's no way to get rid of it, unless each site monitors closely what's posted from it and takes some action against individuals whose main purpose is to irritate others via the electronic board. But then, that would be censorship, wouldn't it be? Poor old net.general, you're going to die. But let's make everybody aware of what net.announce is and how to use it. I support net.announce, and can care less about net.general since I don't subscribe to it. -- Orlando Sotomayor-Diaz/AT&T Bell Laboratories/201-949-1532 ....ihnp4!homxa!osd7 /Crawfords Crnr.
