We recently installed smail 2.5 on our machine and noticed that none of our installed mailers recognize the "From" address any longer. Smail prepends the message with headers reflecting the transport mechanism, ie:uucp etc. It also seems to stick a ">" in front of the actual From. We are running Xenix SVR2.2 our mailers are the svbinmail which comes with smail, the lmail (original Xenix bsd'ish mailer), mush and elm 1.5. NONE OF THEM SEE THE REAL "FROM" They all report the incoming mail from uucp. I seem to remember seeing a similar posting a month or so ago, but saw no replies on the net. I've spoken to others who seem to remember similar problems which went away somehow! HELP!! Thanks in advance for any assistance. Robert A. Johnson ...ihnp4!laidbak!spl1!raj

Try using other mailers on your system to receive mail from 'smail'. We are using '/usr/bin/rmail' which was the original part of the mailer that received mail from uucp. The only thing we have found that doesn't work correct with this is the 'smail' aliases file be our mailer has one also and we allow it to do aliases. One problem we still have, (from 'smail 2.3') is smail doesn't like to process dual address to local users unless their is a ',' between the address and most senders still don't include this because standard mailer don't need a comma. If anyone has fixed this, let us in on a fix. Robert, recompile 'smail' with local mailer set to '/usr/bin/ rmail' and see if this doesn't solve your problems. -- Cyro Lord Alpha Comm. Dev.
