I frequently run elm all day in a single window and was wondering if there was some way to 'expunge' those deleted mail entries other than quiting out of elm and starting it up again. Along the same idea, is it possible to skip to the next/previous non-deleted mail entry ? thanks. The summary sez it all: enter the resynchronization character, "$". This will not only clobber all deleted article entries, but also display new mail.

"c"hange folders to the current folder; i.e., type "c" to change folders, and when it asks you for the name of the folder to change to, just hit the return key. Note: elm will commit the deletions before prompting for the new folder's name. Press "C" (for change mailbox). Answer "Yes" to "Delete Messages?" Answer "Yes" to "Keep messages in incoming mailbox". Just press Return when the new mailbox's name is requested. Elm will use your normal mailbox and will delete all of your deleted messages. Bill McGarry Bunker Ramo, Shelton, CT (203) 337-1518 PATH: {philabs, decvax, fortune, yale}!bunker!wtm

The "$" and "c" commands have been mentioned so I shall mention
that Elm 2.0 gamma and later versions have separate "j", "k" and "J"
and "K" commands. The lower case versions ignore messages marked
for deletion and the upper case versions step by the message number.
Now if only Elm 2.0 could get out to the world, yet. *sigh*
Now how's about a rousing cheer for a feature I talked Dave
Taylor into putting in, but he took back out. I had asked for
Elm to replace the 3 line menu with totals of messages tagged,
marked for deletion, new, and prioritized. Do people like
that option? (I know one can always Sort-by-Status to see, but
that doesn't stay up to date.)

It's tedious "paging" through 10-header screens if you have a large folder. How about an option to specify how many lines of message headers to display? Better yet, allow the option to change depending upon line speed (similar to what "rn" does). Well, the first one is easy - try turning "menu" off (either from the Options screen or within your ".elmrc" file). The second request is something I can sympathize with, Bill. I also run Elm on slower-speed terminals (I'm at 2400 baud right now, for example). What I've done to help this, and I believe it is in version 1.7 of the package, is to allow you to perform most of the common actions while displaying the body of a message on your screen (eg. you could send m)ail, r)eply, f)orward, s)ave, etc etc while at the "10 lines more: " prompt). This helps immensely with the slow screen repainting problem since you need never return to the main index page 99% of the time. As far as specifying the number of lines to display, well, I can't help but think that we're getting into some hardcore `creeping featurism' [more so than my usual coding, right? *grin*] and that it is a feature that would cost more in code size & complexity than it would be worth to the vast majority of Elm users. But perhaps I'm wrong? ?? Anyway, back to my corner... -- Dave Taylor
