[comp.mail.elm] Elm Mailing List

len@netsys.COM (Len Rose) (08/17/88)

So.. Are there any volunteers to run the mailing list? Eric
seems to be too busy.. Am I wasting time by suggesting this?

All bug reports can be forwarded to Eric as a matter of course,
but the alpha list has to become a reality if Elm is to be
de-bugged and released to the net. Everyone has to stay at the
same release level.. There were several things done to get
it up on ames and netsys (BSD 4.3 and SVR3.1 respectively) ..

I am sure Eric never intended this to turn out this way,but
we can't let the ball drop now.

If Eric is too busy (I'm disappointed he couldn't even let us know),
then maybe the person who got the second greatest number of votes
when we voted for coordinator should take over the job. I don't
think you're wasting your time at all.

There are a few of us on the testers mailing list who are mailing
out fixes for bugs we've found. I must have put out nearly a dozen
fixes so far. (No nasty comments on the fact that each one fixed
bugs I introduced in the one before. :-) ) A few times I sent out
to the mailing list a inquiry because the fix I wanted to make
was really a minor *design* change. Most of the time there has been
*no* feedback at all. That's disappointing. At first I was afraid
there'd be too many opinions and differing fixes, (Too many cooks
spoil the soup.) but I guess the opposite has happened.

I just heard that Eric no longer works for Altos, and will be
back in two weeks or so.. I would never have suggested all this
if someone had bothered to let us know what was going on.

Eric's "downtime" was announced on the beta mailing list. Of
course if you're not on the list...

I'd like to be added to any mailing lists dealing with Elm, please.

I have no idea who owns them, however...

Well I would be willing to gateway a mailling list for the Alpha testers
through this machine, but will not set around and play moderator (which I
don't think we need). If everyone that is testing the code would like me
to do this please drop a note to howardl@wb3ffv.UUCP (uunet!mimsy!aplcen!
wb3ffv!howardl). If there is sufficient interest I will set it up and post
a message to this group...

That is pretty dumb when it is obvious I am on the alpha mailing list.

We are about as well connected as a uucp site can be,and I and several
others in the Metro DC area did not receive any notification, and have
not received traffic from the list since the very first message saying
that the alpha source would be available shortly.

Seems to me that if you were on the list you would have received
the announcement, along with the rest of the list traffic. Lighten
up!

Well,Guess I will have to out and get a copy of the Alpha list testers
that Eric sent to this news group to prove my membership :-) ..
Seriously though,at least 6 people in this area did not receive any other
traffic but the lone message "Elm 2.1 is almost ready and will be avail. in
a few days" .. I can speak only for myself but I'd say that the message
re: eric's new job status was not delivered to anyone in this area.

[ deleted stuff about alpha-list credentials ]

Well! When len posted the alpha-list mailing I noticed I was on it!
News to me! I haven't received ANY mailings. I thought my
volunteering was ignored because there were enough testers already. Perhaps
the list is broken, or my address (chad@dcfinc.UUCP) doesn't work from
some sites. Might I suggest a "This is a test" simultaneous posting
to this group and to the list as a reality check? It might explain a
lot of the postings of the "I haven't heard anything about...."

I suggest that we give Eric one more week and then assign the job
for Elm 2.1 preperation to syd at dsinc or one of the other candidates.

When and if Eric comes back he can pick up from elm 2.1 ..

If we don't take charge of the situation now nothing will ever get done.

A Palace Revolution?

  Hello Dave,

I hope you and the others on the NET have better luck that I have, as I
received the first one or two mailings from Eric stating that I was part
of the alpha test list, and that he would soon mail (to the list) where
the sources were avalible from. In fact I even setup a UUCP connection to
altnet, and sent several direct messages to him, but still NO RESPONSE!!

I *am* on the list and received the first two mailings, but I
have not received any notification of Eric's downtime and I have
not been instructed on any procedure to obtain the alpha source.
I tried sending mail to len@netsys, but it keeps getting bounced
back. If any of the other alpha testers would please instruct me
on some means of obtaining the source, I would greatly appreciate
it.

I agree with Len, but I wish to modify the suggestion slightly.
If I have not heard from Eric (from which I have posted several direct
mail pieces over the past two weeks) by this weekend, I will prepare
a test 2.1 and place it on my machine. The testers will then have
a short time to get it and verify it compiles cleanly on their machines.
If all goes well, I will send it to Rich Salz for distribution.

2.1 will contain only bug fixes and portability issues. All patches
posted for new features, including the ones I sent to the mailing list,
will be kept for 2.2 which will start immediately after 2.1 is released.

Sounds good to me. I've been waiting for 2.1, and just last week received a
message about Eric leaving Altos, after it bounced around for a few weeks.
Other than that, I received nothing at either of my addresses. Hopefully
Eric will re-appear sometime soon.
