[comp.mail.elm] Elm 2.1 User aliases

maxim@subch.UUCP (Maxim Samo) (12/06/88)

Hello Elm Users,

Not long ago I installed the new elm 2.1 and it works fine with one exception:
The user defined aliases won't work. Even though an aliases.text file is
generated by elm they won't get expanded nor will the mail be sent to the
right address, when I mail to an alias.

Anybody has or had the same trouble and found a solution?

                             Maxim

Did you also install the newalias tool? I think elm needs it to build
the aliases.hash file which is used for expanding.

Did you run the "newalias" command? It converts the alias text file into the
data file and hash tables that elm uses. When you edit the alias text file
on your own you need to run this program. (If you add an alias within elm,
elm appends the alias to the text file and runs newlias on its own.)

Alias files are slightly different now:

1. The text file is now in .elm/aliases.text instead of .alias_text.

2. The field delimiter's are '=' instead of ':'.

3. After editing the text file, you have to convert it into database
   format by running the *new* version of the "newalias" command.

Here's an example:

mary = Mary Smith = system1!ms
kim  = Kim Harvey = system1!system2!kh
bob = Bob Jones = bj
sysop= Yours truly= root
gals = The girls = mary, kim
guys = The boys = bob, sysop
all = All of us = guys, gals

This is a repost but I am pretty sure that it didn't get anywhere the first
time. If you read this the second time then please excuse me... :-)

Not log ago I hav installed Elm 2.1 PL1 and it works fine with just one
exception: The user defined aliases won't work. Even though an aliases.text
file is generatet in $HOME/.elm they won't get expanded nor will the mail
be sent to the right address when I mail to an alias.

Anybody has or had the same trouble and found a solution?

Since you didn't mention aliases.hash and aliases.data, I suspect that
you have not run 'newalias' after you generated the aliases.text file.

Well, I've answered this one before, and I thought to this group on
news :-), but here goes again.

Did you run newalias. Aliases.text needs to be converted into
the two internal binary files before it will find them. Thus you
must run newalias. If you define the alias within Elm itself, Elm
will run newalias for you. Be sure newalias is installed within
your search path.
