fleischer@viking.DEC (Bob Fleischer LJO2/E4 DTN 282-2323 Rainbow) (06/27/84)
DEC's Rainbow software engineering group is expanding and has a number of positions open at a variety of levels. We are looking for software engineers, supervisors, and senior level managers who have considerable experience in the applicable areas of personal computer software. Managers and supervisors are expected to be lead technical contributors as well as having demonstrated supervisory capability. Senior-level people will participate in long-range planning and strategy for the product family. Our group is involved in the development of nearly all kinds of systems and interface software for Digital's Rainbow family of Intel-processor-based personal computers. And since our philosophy for designing new hardware products is that their design must meet the needs of the software, the software engineers have considerable influence over new hardware designs. If you are interested in working on any of the following areas, you'll find challenging opportunities in our group. (If you see that something is missing from the list, then we really have an opportunity for you!) o personal computer operating systems, both "traditional" (MS-DOS and CP/M) and advanced multitasking systems. o advanced user interfaces, including Microsoft Windows and other windowing and graphics products. o local-area networks and communications, ranging from transport layers to user networking interfaces. o distributed computing products providing such features as transparent access to larger systems (VAX et al). o software development tools, testing tools, diagnostics, quality assurance. We are looking for people with thorough knowledge of how personal computer software is designed and used and with visions of what future software products should be. Despite the fact that DEC is a large company, our software engineering group is moderate in size and has the camaraderie of a small but growing high-tech firm. Because we are a large company, there are a lot of resources available. There are significant opportunities for growth both within the group and in the company at large. In some cases the jobs will involve liaison work with other engineering or support organizations within DEC, in others there will be contact with customers or external software developers. We are located about 50 minutes northwest from Boston. Salary and benefits are competitive (They really are! We don't try to pay you with stock options; initial paid vacation time is 2 weeks, but we work something out for people who want more time.)
