Exciting growth opportunity for a key UNIX System Programmer
awaits that individual in beautiful Chapel Hill, North
Carolina. The Department of Computer Science at the
University of North Carolina is currently recruiting a UNIX
System Programmer to be the key individual responsible for
UNIX on the department's VAX computer systems and a fleet of
68000 based machines (Suns, Masscomps).
The Department is a graduate school only with approximately
120 students. The Department is expanding rapidly. We were
the recipients a year ago of a substantial National Science
Foundation grant and this year of a National Institute of
Health grant. In addition, this summer we will break ground
for a new 4 story, 80,000 square foot Computer Science
facility to be ready in the fall of 1986. The department's
areas of research include graphics and image processing, VLSI
design, software engineering, the architecture of classical
and cellular computers, natural language processing,
databases and information retrieval, and theoretical studies
including algorithm design and analysis. The department also
runs a microelectronics system laboratory for building and
packaging state of the art computing engines.
We need a key UNIX guru that will be capable of enhancing and
maintaining our UNIX systems. We are running Berkeley 4.1
and 4.2 on three vaxes now and will be installing an
additional three vaxes this summer, one of which will be
upgraded to a 785 in early 1985. We currently have several
68000 based machines and will be acquiring approximately 40
more over the next 4 years.
This individual will be responsible for developing and
implementing a software plan to support a local area network
between all of our machines. A distributed file system will
be of prime importance. As we grow this individual's talents
with performance tuning will be critical.
Some of the talents and experience we are looking for include
a degree in computer science, experience with Berkeley UNIX
including C, Pascal and Assembler languages and system level
work on kernel, drivers and other system software.
Performance monitoring and tuning, networking software and
distributed file systems experience desirable.
UNC is located in Chapel Hill part of the Research Triangle
of North Carolina. Located nearby are Duke University, North
Carolina State University, the Microelectronic Center of
North Carolina, and a substantial number of major
corporations involved in electronics and software
development. This is a growing high technology area with a
low cost of living. Beautiful weather with four moderate
seasons. Chapel Hill is three hours from the mountains for
winter skiing and three hours from some of the most beautiful
Atlantic coast beaches. Cultural events abound and many
opportunities for sporting events in the area, most notably
the UNC Tarheel Football and Basketball teams.
If you are a UNIX guru, turned on by growth and new
opportunities and want to enjoy the amenities of life in
Chapel Hill contact William Howell (howell@unc) for
