RESEARCH COMPUTING SYSTEM MANAGER
The Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a computer professional
to manage and develop a multiple VAX/UNIX system supporting scien-
tists, engineers, and administrative personnel engaged in research in
the general field of underwater acoustics measurements, modeling, and
large-scale computer simulations. The system presently consists of
two DEC VAX 11/750's running UNIX 4.1BSD (in the process of converting
to 4.2), under DEC maintenance. "DISSPLA" and the IEEE software pack-
age are in wide use. Budget is approximately $300,000/year. Growth
is vigorous; plans for growth include local-area network, laser
printer/plotter, and a seagoing data acquisition and analysis system.
Duties:
1. Help individual researchers to apply UNIX tools in the design of
specific phases of research projects and in the analysis of
results.
2. Participate in development of computer-based systems and their
in-field testing.
3. Play lead role in planning enhancement of the computer tools
available to the research activities of the Laboratory.
4. Opportunity to develop small computer R and D effort.
5. Determine usage patterns and plan hardware and software confi-
gurations to meet evolving needs.
6. Purchase hardware and software.
7. Supervise assistant system manager and part-time systems program-
mer. Supervise training of selected staff members in C program-
ming, UNIX utilities, and the kernel.
8. Coordinate maintenance by DEC and in-house personnel.
Qualifications:
The person who will fill this job must be able to lead a group of
scientists in their computing activities. He/she should be either a
researcher who finds himself/herself managing a computer, or a com-
puter scientist with a strong educational background in the physical
sciences and experience working with scientists. Educational back-
ground is therefore either
a) an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in engineering, mathematics, or
the physical sciences, or
b) an advanced degree in computer sciences with a strong undergradu-
ate background in the above disciplines.
This person will also have significant experience as systems
administrator or lead systems programmer on a UNIX-based computer,
ideally a VAX with Berkeley UNIX. U.S. citizenship and eligibility
for an industrial security clearance are required.
