[comp.mail.elm] Questions on Elm capabilities

yountm@gtephx.UUCP (Marvin Yount) (07/15/89)

A couple of weeks ago I posted an article here asking some ELM questions.
I'd like to thank Syd Weinstein and Tom Betz for their information on the
latest version of Elm (2.2 PL10). We are in the process of installing this
version. I've received no information on my other two questions, so I thought
I'd try reposting (and hopefully clarifying) these questions. We're really
trying to set up good mailing capabilities for our user community so I hope
someone out there can provide me some information (even if it is that Elm
doesn't have the capability). We are an Apollo site currently running SR9.7
and we are running an old version of Elm (2.2dev PL1) in a VT100 window.
I've heard that Elm doesn't work very well under SR9.7. It seems to work
generally well for me, but if that is the reason the things I'm asking about
don't work I'd like to know that also.

1) Regarding the pager variable in the elmrc file:
If we set this variable to an editor or transcription pad (crpad on the
Apollo) then a new window is opened every time a message is read. If
pager is set to 'builtin' the message is displayed in the same window in
which Elm is running. Using 'builtin' is terrific for short messages,
but it doesn't work well on messages that are larger than the size of the
window. The editor or crpad are great for longer messages because of the
scrolling capabilities, however they take considerably longer to open. Is
there a way of combining these two methods so something like 'builtin'
will read short messages (under so many lines) and have crpad take care of
   long messages?

2) When replying to or forwarding mail with the autocopy flag turned on, is
it possible for Elm to include a header indicating the title and author
of the message being included? What I'm looking for is something along
the lines of what often appears in follow-ups to net articles (ie.,
In article <Questions about Elm>, Marv Yount writes:). I think this
header will be useful to us in keeping track of who's saying what as we
get more and more mail going around our system.

Thanks in advance,
