[comp.mail.elm] "Reply-to:" fields

mikej@lilink.UUCP (Michael R. Johnston) (07/09/89)

Looking over the ELM documentation I can't seem to find how I would
force the program to always include a valid "Reply-to:" header without
my having to specify it. Can someone E-mail me the solution to this?

I'm sure it must be possible (most everything else is with ELM).

[ I'm posting this, as it wasn't easy for me to find either ]

In your elm directory, (~/.elm) create a file called elmheaders. In that
file, you can add lines like:

 Reply-To: jeff@quark.WV.TEK.COM
 Organization: Tektronix Inc, Wilsonville, Or.

[ I've indented the lines a space to make sure that nobody's news software
  goes out to lunch. ]

You can also include things like:
 X-Internet-Address: `/bin/hostid`

Best of luck,

Yes, thats the solution I've found, too. But: Does ELM use the "Reply-to:"
if I want to reply to a mail. I am using ELM 2.2 PL0 and tested it. The
result is that my replies were always sent to the adress given in the
"From:"-entry and not the adress given in the "Reply-to:" header.

(The header should be "Reply-To:". Note the upper case "T".)

Yes, ELM does use the "Reply-To:". When ELM is configured, there is
a choice between relying on the "From:" and "Reply-To:" headers to
get the return address of a message, or else on the "From " lines.
If configured to use the former, ELM will use the "Reply-To:" if
present, else the "From:".

I ask myself the same question. But, more importantly, even if I specify
a "Reply-To" header in .elm/elmheaders it does not show up in the
header when I type 'h' before sending off the mail. In fact, if I
type 'r' to edit the "Reply-To" header I end up with *two* such lines
(possibly different!). Likewise, if I add another header line
such as "Organization" in the elmheaders file this line is also not
shown with the 'h' command. I consider this a bug in my version
of elm (2.2 PL10).
