Under certain circumstances, one of which I will describe, elm is unable to deliver mail, but the resulting error message is only flashed on the screen and quickly replaced by the "Mail sent!" message. This occurs when we perform a group reply to one or more recipients whose last name, and therefore the local part of their e-mail address, contains an apostrophe, such as: Tom.O'Brien@BNR. I have corrected the source of the problem, by specifying the following MAIL FROM record: <"Tom.O\\\\'Brien"@BNR>, which seems to satisfy IBM FAL's SMTP and whatever process creates the UNIX mail From and Return-Path: records. (Yes, there are four back slashes!) Elm was compounding the problem by not providing the appropriate error message for long enough. I am running elm 2.2 patch level 10 on an HP 9000 model 360, although I will be upgrading soon to the latest patch release. Is this a known problem? ...
