We use elm as our campus standard mail handler. There are literally hundreds of students, faculty, staff members, and administrators that use elm on a daily basis. Our department, Information Services, has chosen elm and provides training and support to all of these users. This "user inertia" has what has kept us from moving to version 2.2 of elm, due to the (admittedly slight) variations in the user-interface. We have recently become aware of some nasty bugs in 2.1 that make us want to move to 2.2 as soon as possible. This will require quite a bit of retraining. My question is whether or not there are any changes in the user-interface between 2.2 and 2.3. If there are, and 2.3 will indeed be released within a few months time, we would be inclined to put off a move to 2.2 and wait for 2.3 Can anyone please describe the type of changes to the UI in 2.3 and tell me if it in fact will be released by June. (The last speculative date I saw was May.) Thanks for any info. Tim Perala (tperala@ub.d.umn.edu) Systems Programmer Information Services University of Minnesota, Duluth (218) 726-6122

(The last speculative date I saw was May.) Elm 2.3 is still scheduled for a 5/1/90 release. That date was choosen to be generous, but does not allow for time for it to appear in comp.sources.unix, thus it will be available for ftp on 5/1/90 but not in the news group probably by that date. As to the user interface changes. There are a couple: DEL is no longer a syn. for x (exit) command. Add BSD style screen sizing when the IOCTL calls exist. Add -v option for Elm version and options information. Allows specifying the temp directory to be used by Elm. Allow for restricting shell escapes from Elm. (But of course, not from any pager or editor Elm would invoke) Add PID type locking to the lock file. Make Elm confirm an x command if changes pending, allow X to be the old non confirming x command. Add some checking for space problems and force an emergency exit in those cases. Allow the alias file to be used across heterogenous networks by keeping it in network byte order if NFS is available. (requires all users to rerun newalias) Add support for MMDF style mailboxes. Aliases are now case insensitive as per survey results I hope that helps.
