Help!
I'm running on a 386 PC Clone, using Xenix Sys V 386 2.3.2, with the
latest Excelan ethernet soft/hard ware.
Prior to this, we had been using 386 PC Clone, Xenix SV386 2.3.1, and
elm up to PL16 without any difficulty.
When we moved to the upgrade, and installed Excelan's stuff, it started
destroying the address lines. An address set:
To: elw (Edwin Wiles), lockhart (Gloria Lockhart)
became:
To: elw, (Edwin, lockhart, (Gloria
Now this isn't too bad on our own systems, even though we lose the
names, we don't get extra mail, and everything gets through OK.
However, when this stuff goes "offsite" to our gateway, we start
seeing stuff like:
From: Edwin@domaingarbage, Wiles@domaingarbage, netex!netxdev!elw
Which is NOT GOOD! Especially when you try to reply to it!
I mucked through the Excelan documentation, and found that those @(*#%$
critters had decided:
The XENIX Mail system does not understand mail message
comments, as defined in RFC822, incorrectly treating them
as addresses. [BULL! Elm &etc, worked just FINE! With
comments!] Therefore, you should not use any such comments
in your destination addresses. Also, if comments are present
in an address that you are trying to reply to, you must
edit the "To:" header of the reply to remove them. [Nope!
Never had to do that either!]....
The only thing I can figure is that they made no allowance for the use
of mailers other than /usr/bin/mail. Since everything worked BEFORE we
installed ethernet, I can only assume that it's EXCELAN's stuff that's
messing the headers up, not XENIX. Unfortunately, I could find no way
to turn off this "feature" of EXCELAN's software.
Here's my questions:
1) Is there any way to turn that EXCELAN "feature" off?
2) Is there any way to turn off the (name) comments in ELM?
(Without custom modification of the source, I want to be
as "stock" as possible. Though I wouldn't mind a recompile
with different 'configure' switches.) I did rerun configure
hoping for some switch that I'd missed before to jump up and
hit me, but I didn't see any such.
I know! I know! I should switch to 'sendmail' or 'smail' or 'deliver'
or some such. I'd be delighted to! I *intend* to! But simply wont
have the time to do so for *at*least* two months, and I need a fix NOW.
Many Thanks for Any Help!
