[From recent issue of the 'Boeing News'] DREAMERS NEEDED: APPLY TO BAC Boeing Aerospace Company's new Preliminary Design organization needs people who are inventive, innovative, and creative; people who can make an educated guess on what programs will be coming into the forefront five years from now; people who like to start with an advanced idea and see it through to a prototype demonstration. "We're looking for conceptual designers with the capability of dreaming up solutions to new requirements", said Pete Downey, director of the company's new, centralized preliminary design group. "We're looking for those people who will take advantage of technologies that are moving along and apply those technologies to potential new products." The new organization will focus on company-wide programs beyond the next four years. It will look into larger horizons and find the solutions to the technological challenges of future programs. "We're putting more emphasis on the long-range programs," Downey said. "If you don't start thinking of the five-year time horizon and beyond, then you have a problem when the competition comes up. You haven't done your homework." Therefore, the job of preliminary designers will be to foresee those areas where the products of the future will be and start doing the conceptual and technological homework now. Then when the competition comes up, they will have established a position for Boeing by doing some unique things that will favor the company. According to Downey, the people needed for his organization are system engineers or configurators. These people would work with engineers on the technology staff and therefore should have a broad range of technological experience.
