Newalias appears not to be able to cope with very long alias lists.
I have a list of about 80 names which I use for a mailing list.
Newalias will core dump.
I also have the problem that there seems to be a limit on
the length of the address that elm will accept. I
have some aliases which are 24 chars long and newalias refuses
to process them. It claims that the alias name is too long.

ST5 5BG. U.K. I get the same result when I try to use the 'g' command to do a group reply. Newalias doesn't seem to have any problem digesting my large (>90 names) all list but gives a segment violation and core dumps if anyone trys to reply using the 'g' command.
