[comp.mail.elm] processing bounced mail

fsb@vitro.com (Steve Brailsford) (03/11/91)

The otherday, I recieved about 400 bounced messages that
my machine tried to forward to another machine through
a third. Well, the third machine was down and the forwarder
bounced them back to me, who gets postmaster mail. I then
get a 1 Meg mailfile and no easy way to prosess it to resend
it when the machine went up again. I tried to edit the
file to remove the stuff about being bounced,
but that made it unreadable to elm. Why was it unreadable?
And how could I have remailed it without using bounce command
and typing in all 400 odd addresses?
Thanks.

Is it possible that the sender had a line like:

Return-Receipts-To:

in his elmheaders file? If so, and he posted to a mailing list then
when all 400 recepients got the message, they all replied. I posted
about the fact that you can't edit the line out when you put it into
the elmheaders file, and got only one response. From a gentleman that
told me how to edit the line into the elm send screen. I already
knew how to do that. I got about 250 return receipts from when it
happend to me. I quickly removed the line.

Any chnce that the elmheaders file will be read BEFORE the main send
screen in future releases of elm? Syd?

Any chance that it would be an option in the send screen to include
the Return-Receipts-To: line or not? (please!!)

May be with an default entry in the elmrc file.

I have the Return-Receipts-To: line in the elmheaders file too.
And I fear the moment when I will mail into a mailing list. :-)

It is already an option there. Just tell it 'u' and then type the
header line as you want it.

ok. But I'm a little bit lasy. I want send nearly all mails with the
Return-Receipts-To: and it would be a little bit annoying to type
at every mail 'Return-Receipts-To: hessmann@unipas.fmi.uni-passau.de'.

I think Rmail has a key-sequence for inserting the R-R-T: line, too.
