[comp.mail.elm] Compiling filters?

brendan@cs.widener.edu (Brendan Kehoe) (03/20/91)

An idea struck me as I added filter-rules entry #22...

What about creating a "compiled" version of the filter? It could be
something of the format

	headerfield<fs>expect string<fs>filename

which should be considerably faster for filter to read than the full
test of "if (to contains "howdy") then save /home/greetings". If you
have 30+ filters, and the mail coming in happens to hit the last one,
it eats up more system resources than if it could skip rapidly thru
the file.

 Whatcha think?

Brendan
